1619 Project For the Win
The struggle continues to win
I am pretty sure America’s ideological bigots on the right didn’t like that the 1619 Project won an Emmy Award. Yes, Nicole Hannah Jones’ bold idea that began as a magazine article in the New York Times, evolved into a book, and then a children’s book, then evolved into a HULU television series won an Emmy Award this week. Yes.
The win is for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series Emmy. Boom!
For Americans, the Emmy Award means something. It means your show was popular and critically considered very good. The best, in fact, in its category. It means the show will endure into time as credible, relevant, cultural, and socially important. Like the 1977 program ROOTS, for example, adapted from an equally powerful book, written by the late Alex Haley. That program won a Golden Globes award. The final episode was one of the most watched in the history of American television.
The 1619 Project enjoyed no such joyous cultural ride. It was attacked from the start even though all it did was recite the true facts of history. But Hannah-Jones’ project continues to win and win again despite the attempts to discredit her and the project. The truth cannot be stopped and it will set you free if you just let it.
