The draft list of countries on the draft immigration ban list reveals serious bigotry.
In Donald Trump’s first term, his Muslim ban was one of his first disturbing acts as President. There was outrage, lawsuits, appeals, and fierce pushback. Now, in his second term, he is not pretending anymore. A list of countries has been issued; nearly all are majority non-European/non-white countries. Instead of just 10 countries in 2017, 43 are on the list.
Here is the draft list under consideration. It was leaked out:
Full visa suspension:
Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen
Partial visa suspension (tourist, student and some other visas affected):
Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, South Sudan
Countries recommended for a partial suspension if they do not address deficiencies:
Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia.
The only country on this preliminary ban list that is European is Belarus. The remaining nations on this long list are non-white countries and/or from the Global South. Many of the countries on the list are just countries that the administration has a…
