AMERICAN CULTURE

An American Pope

The white smoke appears, at last

Pope Leo XIV waves at the people gathered in St. Peter’s Square in his first public appearance as pope.

The Catholic Court has a new Pope. He is an American. His name is Robert. Last name: Prevost. Full name: Robert Francis Prevost. He is originally from Chicago.

He has spent time serving his church and God all over the world. I do not know much about him. I am not Catholic. I did attend a Catholic all-boys high school. Archbishop Carroll High School. That is where and Pope Leo XIV connect a little.

My high school was founded by the Augustinian Order. It was founded originally with racial integration in mind, a school that sought to defy the racial segregation in Washington, D.C. at the time. As my school’s website proudly states:

“When Cardinal O’Boyle opened Carroll in 1951, he quietly ordered it to be racially integrated — one of the first D.C. schools to defy segregation, four years before the Supreme Court declared the practice unconstitutional.”

That is where Pope Leo XIV and I connect. I have no idea if the Augustinian Order champions racial understanding, tolerance, and respect, but I will give Pope Leo XIV a chance to do his thing. My high school did try to teach tolerance, peace, and love amongst human beings.
