City of Milwaukee, redlining map from the 1930s

Two men, friends, one black, the other white are talking on the corner:

…you know the money.

The money?

My money? You know, money I could have had?

You never had it. It is not real.

It is. This is not ‘Strawberry fields.”

You are being funny, I get it.

No you don’t. This is real. The money.

Explain.

My parents bought a house. 1961. $15,000. $500 down. They paid it off. Today, that house is worth $600,000.

Do they still own it?

No they got their share. They paid it off, used it, then sold it. They bought a bigger house.

So what are you saying?

They could have had the house earlier right? Or someone else like them.

What does that have to do with me?

What does that have to do with me? That’s the slavery spin. My people never own anybody? We know that.

What are you trying to say?

You don’t understand?
