Even in Michigan, it has some special qualities and a complex, rich history. I learned much living there and met some great human beings. Most people don’t know Ann Arbor upheld the use of Ebonics in teaching English. Michigan is also the home of the upper Underground Railroad. But the Republicans up there forgot or were never taught that the party was founded to stop the spread of slavery. It was an anti-slavery party. They have rigged the politics there and embedded evangelical zealotry into all their decisions. I no longer felt safe living there. I feared for my children especially. So I think we all have to figure out our safe space here. And what we are willing to tolerate and endure.
