VOTING RIGHTS AND AMERICA
Letter to the Democratic Party
An absurd imaginative (though plausible) deal on voting rights
Dear DNC —
What if, in multiple states in the U.S., African-American voters propose a deal with your party, in writing, for the restoration of the Voting Rights Act? Is that too much to ask? Let us do away with this system of speculative political activity and, like Monty Hall, make a deal. A quid pro quo. Your party is in trouble anyway because of your policy regarding Israel-Palestine, so hey, let us throw you a bone.
Why the deal?
This is easy.
The United States functions under an antiquated, flawed, colonial electoral system that was fashioned to protect the rights of slaveowners and the planter class but also to maintain minority rule. That arrangement remains in place. It is time for a change.
The Democratic Party can be that change if it wants to be that change, and its loyal African-American voting bloc can be the road to electoral explosion. There is no reason to avoid this either. It is time to have some guts and change the direction of the country with more democracy. The only antidote to “bad ideas” is a better idea.
