Everyone who knows something about the coronavirus, about Covid-19 says, wear a mask. Everyone. If you enter a store, or some other public establishment, wear the mask. People aren’t listening. So the virus lives on vibrantly in the U.S. Loves it here. The really saddest thing of all is masks actually work, even masks that are low tech. Leadership in other parts of the world and in some parts of the U.S. get it: they are insisting upon masks.
I went to a graduation this last week. One of those drive through graduations. The real graduation was canceled to keep us safe. We were advised to stay in our cars. Look at the screen. It was planned this way to reduce transmission of the virus. Many did not listen.
They did not stay in their cars. They got out and mingled. Their parents did not stop them because some parents also got out their cars. None of them wore masks. Some of the students sat bunched up in the front of the cars for most of the graduation. It was reckless. We have just been told that some of the students at the graduation have tested positive for the coronavirus.
In related news, a popular restaurant bar opened back up, and it is reported that over 100 people who ate at the restaurant are now positive for the coronavirus. Some likely were spreading it before they found out they were infected. They did not have on masks. This story is repeated all over the U.S.
Coronavirus is treated like climate change here. It is part selfishness, part denial of science, mostly I don’t give a damn. And then people say, their freedom is more important than the health of others. And then they say, I don’t want to live in a “Mommy state” where the government tells them what to do. Yet, they can’t do simple, rational things just to keep themselves safe and keep others safe. Someone I know wrote a letter to the school where that so called “safe” graduation was held that turned out to be not safe anyway. Here is an excerpt of the letter that gets deep into the problem here:
Government leadership at the federal level made it clear from way back how it feels. They have turned masks into a device to divide. Some governors, in many states, have taken this seriously (New York, Michigan, Illinois, California, etc. for example). Others have scoffed at it and tempted the unruly and the selfish to make mockery of what being a citizen is about. We see and hear it everyday.
