People
One of my best students right now was born in Russia.
He studies hard, comes to class, and is not afraid to ask questions. He also brings an open minded perspective on Russia and the U.S. I expect him to do great things one day, in America.
When I took a training in housing discrimination once in Michigan, one of the coolest participants was a guy from Russia. He had immigrated to the U.S. He was quite compassionate and pragmatic and had a great sense of humor. He wanted to make money for his family.
Dance
My daughter, who has been training in the art of Russian ballet for almost 20 years, was once picked by a Russian company to dance in the company. They were very serious and very protective of the dancers and felt very strongly of her skills and talents.
Her teacher, from when she was very small, was Sandra Fortune-Green. Fortune Green was the first African American ballerina to compete in the International Ballet competition held in Moscow.
George Balanchine, creator of American ballet, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia.
