Ted Williams Was…Mexican?

Many years ago when a friend, a sports buff like me, said Ted Williams was Mexican, I laughed. This was probably around the time Williams died.
Then I looked it up and it was true. I had no idea.
It is true, that the great Ted Williams was part Mexican-American. In American terms, in its racial categorization system, Ted is Mexican American.
Williams’ mother was May Venzor. She was from El-Paso, Texas, but it is likely she was born in San Diego, Texas. According to many sources, she was Mexican and Basque. According to some of these same sources, Williams’ father named his son after Teddy Roosevelt (Theodore) and Ted was instructed to repress his Latinx heritage, don’t discuss it.
Williams did as instructed as he recorded one of the greatest careers in the history of Major League Baseball. He played 19 seasons, missed three for military service but rarely missed a beat.
Williams hit .344 for his career and had an on-base average of .482. Williams had 521 home runs and 1839 runs batted in.
Add into these amazing career stats — 2,654 hits and a 1941 season where he hit .406. Williams was such a good hitter he only hit under .300 one season in his career. He even hit .388 at the age of 38. His…
