Thanks for again pushing the discussion beyond the "us" v "them" paradigm that patriotism almost always invokes. Some Jewish people, I stress, supported and got involved in the Civil Rights movement. "SOME." There were Black people who opposed the marches. Does she know that? The struggle is almost always more nuanced than the way journalists spin it. Many Jewish Americans are disgusted by the violence in Israel and Gaza but they do not support the occupation and never did or they have been calling for the occupation to end and are putting this at the feet of Netanyahu who got re-elected and installed a hard core nationalist government. The Jewish people are not a monolith. I have students who have family in Israel. Their family members now have to join the army. It is personal. I also have students, Jewish and Arab, who as I do, abhor the killing. But this has been going on for a long, long time. Even members of Hamas disagree with Hamas on many issues but they have no options. Hamas hasn't held elections in 17 years. It is an authoritarian organization. But, it rose up as a result of occupation. Hamas could disappear tomorrow if the occupation was ended. To attack BLM is plain twisted. BLM has nothing to do with this dispute. I have seen Palestinians and Jews the last few days voice support for their people. I respect both of those positions. Leaders are leaders and people are people. I think we are all disgusted by killing like this no matter where it is. People looked at me odd when I denounced Putin over Ukraine. They said how could I support a Nazi like Zelensky. I checked out of that convo.
