Thanks for the comment. I have no issue with any of the terms — Black, Black American, African American; yet, after reading Baraka’s essay, “Black is a country,” I truly believe it is the most defining and accurate. Black is the choice of the African people in the U.S. in response to the racial caste system they confronted. Others use it, and use other terms as well (West Indian, African, etc.) but “Black” does it for me, in much the way my Italian friends often tell me, they are not “white,” they are Italian. I know what they mean when they say it and why they say it.
