Thanks for this cultural history. My father served stateside during the Korean conflict 1947-1951. He was in processing where he learned office skills like typing. When he was at Fort Dix, he said at first they would make the Black soldiers move to the back of the bus when the bus hit the Mason Dixon line. By the time he was done, the soldiers had stopped adhering to that. He was living in Baltimore where he was born. My uncles, his brothers, all served as well. His oldest did time in the Navy but after a racial incident, went to the Marines and finished 20 years of service there. He is interred in Arlington.
