Thanks Mindy. I wrote this because when I let my Jewish students out of class to go, I received some nasty looks. Like you, I am old enough to have the long view. I think they should go and begin to understand the historical conflict and I bet some of them learned a lot. I am also sure they didn't go because they hate Arabs. Just like my Arab students who went to the other march show no sign they secretly are anti-semites. Also Remnick saying don't say "but" in this situation meant a lot to me. He said you have to admit that Hamas is fucked up and the Nakba and the occupation are fucked up. It is not an either/or. Anti-semitism is fucked up, and Islamaphobia is fucked up. I am trying real hard these days to not say, but. That's a version of whataboutism that Trump has everyone using. I am also not dismissing anyone for like bad moments. I don't think that people are necessarily racists forever and ever. I don't have enough mental energy to despise people all day everyday. It is a waste of my mind space. Thanks again, though I am pretty sure many people will misunderstand this. The vitriol out here is intense.
