Day 3 of Kwanzaa is simple for me. Ujima. Collective Work and Responsibility.

Clean your house. Do it as a family. A group. A collective.

Because it also means “cleaning” your house but also “clean” your house. You dig?

Also, clean your community. Go help someone else clean their house or their yard.

Collective work and responsibility.

If you have some long put-off projects in your home or community, do it today, or during this Kwanzaa festival.

There is something basic about Day 3. There is something free about it. There are not many things that can get in the way of the ideals of Day 3.

That is the point of the Nguzo Saba concepts. These are efforts to improve one’s community and to improve life for African Americans regardless of how America treats them.

This is something African Americans can control. This is something that is not based on money.

Clean up your space and your home. Tidy up your work area. Collectively complete a project in the family home or within the community.

It might be something outside the home. Something that you can collectively complete. It is not difficult either.

It might be something more technical, something bigger that needs a collective group to tackle for the greater good. Regardless, today is the day to take that first step even if it is just a thought or a proposal.

It is Ujima.
