Victor Hugo Green, a Black postman from New York City, published The Negro Motorist Green Book from 1936 to 1967, identifying businesses that would welcome Black customers instead of rejecting them. The Green Book included "a variety of businesses — from restaurants and hotels to beauty salons and drugstores — that were necessary to make travel comfortable and safe." The book also provided valuable advice about identifying the signs of a sundown town, an all-White community where Black people could endure violence if they stayed after sunset. Sundown towns, which discriminated against and endangered the lives of Black travelers, were not confined to the South but also found in the “Midwest, in the West and in the North.”

Very real. My family had one place in Atlantic City (a rooming house) where we knew we could stay. I never knew it as a kid. Later at a family reunion the young cousins were told of this reality.
