Paul Brock is somewhere angry. I met “the Paul Brock,” the first Executive Director of the National Association of Black Journalists, in 2001. He gave me some healthful tips about writing and the importance of the Black Press. He was a mentor. I am, however, not a journalist. I did think of Mr. Brock today when Donald Trump was present at the NABJ convention.

I need not get into the specifics of the very forgettable meeting. But here goes a little, for the record, as lawyers like to say.

The ex-President accused the moderator Rachel Scott from ABC News of being nasty and rude for doing what a journalist should do: ask a tough question. Scott did. He had no answer. He never has answers. But still, this is what you must do as a journalist: hold the country’s political leadership to account. Applause for Scott.

Later in the same panel, the ex-President asserted that Kamala Harris is not “Black.” He accused her of suddenly claiming her Blackness. (Yes, it got dumber). He also juxtaposed that line of empty talk with chatter about Vice President Harris with being Indian until not long ago. This is what we get from a former President.
