Who Will Speak for Markus Kemp?
A car thief of the rich gets 25 years and no one thinks it is odd?
I do not know Marcus Kemp.
He is 23 years old and his life could be over. He was just sentenced to 25 years in prison for stealing cars and running a car theft ring in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
I immediately found it strange his sentence is so long. Here’s why:
All of the cars Kemp stole or arranged to be stolen had the keys inside in the very affluent Chevy Chase neighborhood.
No one was hurt.
His crew specifically targeted the very rich in the Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Am I missing something?
Twenty five years. (The judge was Black, by the way, so I am not playing the race card).
And check this. He turned his thefts into a business. He would illegally lease the cars out to people for a few hundred dollars a day. He once bragged, according to news accounts, that he leased one car for $1000. Wow.
He had done this before. So no mercy there. Kemp needs to chill.
Yet, though I am not saying it is totally okay he did all of this, I am also taken aback by the long stretch. A person who is able to do this is likely not a danger to society…
