Why America Is Done
Gore Vidal’s prediction
All my life, living in America meant that I lived in the center of the world’s universe. Everything in America mattered and the rest of the world saw it that way. I do not know if that were true but America mattered. To me.
Not anymore.
I do not have that feeling anymore. I don’t believe this is the center of anything. It is just a country among many countries on earth. I don’t even think people care much anymore. They did once but that is over.
A friend of mine, who lives abroad, wrote me recently and said this:
“After these Trump years and the return of The Great Cheeto (or, The Cheat-o), all the expats have given up on America. We don’t even talk about it that much at all.”
That is how I feel. It is done. It is not if the boat will sink; it is just how it will sink and how long it will take to sink. We hit the iceberg. We then circled back around and ran into it again.
This is why I say it is apparent that the America empire, as Gore Vidal wrote years ago, has run out of gas. Vidal wrote an essay about it and he explained how it was only a matter of time that America would fade from the world stage. It has faded. It is not that relevant anymore.
